His attempts to get at the real problem only ended up in tetchy words and denial which didn't help.

He decided that if he couldn't get an explanation this evening he would seek professional help. When Mary went to sleep Alan sat beside Tess by the bed. As always she was reluctant to discuss it but Alan promised her he could not live in a relationship where he was not wanted. This got his wife's attention. 'I don't need you'? She wailed 'I hate myself ! I thought you wouldn't want me if you saw how I look like now when I'm undressed.’ He was taken aback by this. 'Darling I want you so much'.’

Further conversation helped alan to realise how depressed she was about the deep stretch marks, caused by the pregnancy, that coated her belly and thighs. Together they decided to seek support and soon found a physician and a treatment which did not need surgery. Also their relationship grew stronger for talking through the problem and finding the answer together.
