In terms of sheer usability, gold is certainly among the easiest precious metals to use, and it melds particularly well with other metals. Cultures around the world used gold in their religions and as a signifier of wealth and prosperity. The concept of precious metals such as gold as a form of currency came quite early, possibly beginning in the Classical Period. Even in our world of credit cards and internet banking, we still look at bars of gold with awe and wonder, much as our ancestors would have. Gold is still very much a sign of wealth today - you see this often when people build or renovate houses and include things like gold taps or baths in their designs.


Easy to pound into shapes and forms, but hard to melt, gold has been used by man since the dawn of time. Because of its brilliant colour, ancient people believed that gold must have come from the gods. Hence its widespread use in early religions. Gold as currency is an old concept - it goes back at least to the Classical Period in history. People "recycled" gold through history, and we're no different today - at any one time today we recycle at least a 3rd of all the gold in the world.

It could be said that our artistic, religious as well as our financial expertise developed with gold. Today we value gold somewhat differently as a culture. Younger generations see their pop idols wearing bling on television without perhaps even realizing the importance gold plays in the transistors of their cell phones and laptop computers.
